FPV Drones Over Water
Traveling up the east coast of the United States I’ve found myself flying into what I would call, “unrecoverable” situations. That is to say if I have signal loss, battery voltage drop, or if I crash, there’s really no getting the drone back.
For these two flights out over open water I chose to fly my Xhover Stingy V1. This drone has been through a few different iterations and seen the most flight time...IE crashes. So, I’m slightly less partial to it if it doesn’t come back.
My Xhover Stingy V1 is running a Team Blacksheep Crossfire nano receiver hooked up to an Immortal T antenna mounted off a front motor arm. This combined with a TBS Triumph antenna plugged into an Immersion RC 5.8Ghz video transmitter is a pretty solid link, provide you have clear line-of-sight to the drone.
My flight over the Southwest Harbor in Maine was one i squeezed between spurts of rain. I wrapped some electrical tape around the main frame section of the drone to help protect the ESCs and flight controller, I should probably do a more thorough job of this since this drone is seeing more action.
I could definitely be pushing my range further for these flights, but out over open water and just flying for fun, for now I keep the range a little shorter in favor of getting my drone back.
